Bridging suspention- and bubble-scale modeling

One of the primary challenges between connecting the bubble- or crystal-scale growth and deformation physics to suspension-scale properties and dynamics lies in the gap in resolution that increases the computational expense making meter- to kilometer-scale processes out of reach. I work on models at both bubble- and suspension scales, as well as how to connect the two.

Multi-scale modeling with MVFFIN

I am currently developing a Multiscale Vesiculation, Fluid flow, Failure, and Interaction Numerical model (MVFFIN) which simulates bubble growth on a small number of representative bubbles and applies the changes in bubble volume, melt chemistry, and bulk rheology to a linearized Navier-Stokes suspensions-scale flow model to understand how vesiculation processes drive deformation and texture evolution.
